We’re going on a photo walk through the Bijlmer, the new, multicultural district of the city. We’ll walk beneath the pillars of the metro lines toward the monument to the Bijlmerramp (the cargo plane crash that struck this neighborhood in 1992). From there, we’ll continue to Ganzenhoef Market, where suddenly the products and colors of the tropics are laid out in vibrant displays.
The Bijlmer is Amsterdam — and yet it feels different. You already notice it on the metro from Amsterdam Centraal: the colour of the people in the carriage gradually change as you move closer to the destination.
For photographers, this neighborhood is a gem. The bold, brutalist architecture of the 1960s and 70s meets a population shaped by immigration, at times more open, at times more reserved than what you encounter in the historic city center.
The obvious route is to take Metro 53 from Amsterdam Centraal. Departure is at 9:30 AM, arriving at Ganzenhoef at 9:50 AM.
